Another Vietnam: Pictures of the War from the Other Side
Another Vietnam: Pictures of the War from the Other Side
ISBN: 0792264657
Authors: Tim Page. Doug Niven & Chris Riley, eds. Henry Allen, foreword.
Pages/Length: 240
Publisher: National Geographic
Publication Date: 2002
Format: Cloth
Primary Subject: photography

An American photojournalist of the Vietnam War here shows the other side of the conflict through images by North Vietnamese photographers. These black and white photos are very different from the gritty American documentation of the war: where we showed the fighting, North Vietnamese photographs concentrated on the fighters, and reveled in their idealism, often through staged images. And yet, as Marine veteran Henry Allen notes in his foreword, these gifted photographers did not see themselves as falsifying the war—they believed in what they placed before the camera. Tim Page provides essays for five chapters—from the waning days of French Indochina in the 1940s and 50s through 1975, when Viet Cong tanks rolled into Saigon—and his captions often include commentary from the photographers themselves.
